A good night's sleep is essential for our well-being. But how many hours of sleep do we need? The recommended sleep time for an adult is approximately 8 hours per night. Understanding sleep and its benefits

Sleep involves several stages to help you wake up and start your day. During the night, you'll go from light sleep to deep sleep to REM sleep, during 4 to 6 cycles of around 1h30 each. 

The first few hours of sleep are devoted to deep sleep. It is thought to have the function of rebuilding energy bricks and regenerating cells and neurons. The second half of the night is devoted to light and REM sleep. The latter promotes memory and learning.

Sleep puts your body on standby, allowing it to regulate numerous vital functions. These include protecting your heart, preserving your immunity, regulating hormones, keeping you in a good mood and boosting mental and physical performance.

Sleep deprivation, on the other hand, results in “sleep debt”, which has a number of adverse effects:

  • Cognitive functions (drowsiness, loss of concentration, mood disorders, impaired judgment, etc.)
  • Organic functions (cardiovascular disorders, strokes, high blood pressure, weight gain, diabetes...)
  • Immune functions (increased risk of infection...) 

Adopt “sleep hygiene

This is a concept not to be neglected. It requires the implementation of a routine that allows your internal clock to function properly. Here are the 3 essential points:

  1. Regularity. Adopt a regular routine during the week and at weekends, especially when getting up. To help you do this, remember the 7x7=49 rule (at least 7 hours sleep, 7 days a week) for restorative and regenerative sleep.

  3. Morning wake-up time. Give yourself a gradual wake-up time in the morning to get the day off to a good start. Avoid getting up at the last minute, so as not to disrupt your sleep rhythm and your biological clock. A gentle wake-up call ensures a smooth transition between sleep and wakefulness, making for a more serene day. So you can be sure of a better quality of sleep and a more restful awakening.
